Silicon iron is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. Its core components are iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), and it also contains small amounts of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and other impurities. It is one of the most widely used iron alloys in the metallurgical industry and is a key auxiliary material in steelmaking and casting fields.
Core characteristics and production
Composition specifications: The silicon content of industrial silicon iron is usually 15% to 90%. Common grades include FeSi75 (silicon 72% to 78%), FeSi65, FeSi45, etc. Among them, FeSi75 is the most commonly used grade;
Production process: It is produced by the reduction method in a cupola furnace. Using silica (SiO), coke, and iron ore (or scrap steel) as raw materials, it is reduced by carbon at high temperatures to combine with iron to form silicon iron. This is a high-energy-consuming electric heating metallurgical process;
Physical properties: It is silver-gray in color, hard and brittle. The melting point decreases with the increase in silicon content (about 1200°C to 1300°C). It has poor conductivity and low thermal conductivity. It has good deoxidation and alloying capabilities.
