In building materials, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose can act as dispersing agents, thickeners and binders, and HPMC is mainly used in the molding of cement mortar and plaster products.  With cement mortar, HPMC will increase adhesion, reduce flocculation, improve viscosity, shrinkage, and water retention, reduce the water loss of concrete surface, enhance the strength, and prevent the occurrence of cracks or weathering effects from water-soluble salts.
